Nutrition 4 Kids with Iron Deficiency

A Dietitian Guided Program for Children with Suspected or Diagnosed Iron Deficiency

DID YOU KNOW…

Iron deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency in the world!

Why does iron deficiency or iron deficiency anemia matter?

Low iron or anemia is nothing to be brushed off. It is a major health concern in children that needs to be addressed, assessed early and treated effectively. A child with low iron can have delayed growth and untreated anemia may affect mental development and function that often leads to attention problems, delays in reading ability and poor school performance.

47% of school-aged children are iron deficient

and that number is likely higher as many children are not tested.

Do you suspect your child is iron deficient? Have they been diagnosed with low iron?

Who is at risk?

  • Babies born premature or low-birth weight

  • Breastfed babies not given complementary foods at 6 months

  • Milk babies (drinking excessive milk daily)

  • Young children during growth spurts

  • Teens, especially girls with heavy menstrual cycles

  • Those with a low iron diet

  • Children with poor digestion and/or absorption

Symptoms of iron deficiency and their severity can vary; some children may have only one to two symptoms or even be asymptomatic.

Is your child showing any of these signs:

  • Headaches

  • Pale skin & dark circles under the eyes

  • Sleep issues

  • Fatigue or feeling tired often

  • Poor appetite

  • Concentration problems

  • Muscle weakness

  • Lack of focus or inattention

  • Dizziness

  • Shortness of breath
